Dear Commissioner of Police,

SUBJECT: PROTECTION OF MARYAM IBRAHIM'S HUMAN RIGHTS AND
CONSTITUTIONAL FREEDOMS
We, at the International Human Rights Advocacy and Awareness Centre
LTD/GTE (IHRAAC), write to urgently bring to your attention a grave infringement on
the rights of Maryam Ibrahim, our dedicated volunteer in Jigawa State. Maryam has
been subjected to threats and baseless accusations by her employer due to her essential
role as a protest monitor and her lawful exercise of constitutional rights to freedom of
expression and assembly.
Maryam Ibrahim was fulfilling her duty by monitoring and documenting a
protest, a fundamental aspect of civil society engagement. A video she captured during
this event garnered attention and has unfortunately led to unwarranted backlash and
intimidation tactics against her. Such actions are clearly aimed at silencing her critical
voice and obstructing her efforts to promote transparency and accountability.
We respectfully request your immediate intervention to ensure the following:
1. Safeguard Maryam Ibrahim's physical safety and protect her from ongoing
harassment and threats.
2. Initiate a thorough investigation into the allegations raised against her and take
decisive measures to prevent any further intimidation or reprisals.
3. Uphold Maryam's inalienable constitutional rights, including her right to
freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly, which are sacrosanct
pillars of democratic societies.
Furthermore, we bring to your attention the troubling actions of the Jigawa State
Manager of the National Television Authority (NTA), who has unlawfully intruded into
Maryam Ibrahim's workplace and coerced her into responding to unwarranted queries.
This blatant harassment and intimidation must be promptly addressed by the General
manager of NTA. It is imperative that the NTA does not become an instrument of
suppression or coercion against individuals exercising their fundamental rights. We
insist that NTA employees are afforded full protection from undue pressure and threats,
and that their rights are unequivocally respected and safeguarded.
A copy of this urgent communication has been disseminated to relevant authorities,
including the Inspector General of Police, the Director General and State Manager of
the National Television Authority, and the esteemed Governor of Jigawa State, to ensure
a comprehensive and coordinated response to this distressing situation.
We earnestly appreciate your immediate attention and decisive action on this matter
of utmost importance.
Yours Sincerely
