Donald John Trump is an American politician, media personality, and businessman who served as the 45th president of the United States from 2017 to 2021. Trump received a Bachelor of Science in economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. His father named him president of his real estate business in 1971

Donald Trump said he was shot in the ear at a US presidential campaign rally, saying he heard a “whooshing sound” and felt the “bullet ripping through my skin”.

The man suspected of carrying out the shooting was reportedly killed in a Secret Service ambush after attempting to assassinate Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

In addition to trying to kill Trump, the Secret Service report said the attack also killed one person in the crowd. Two others were critically injured.

An eyewitness at the march told the BBC he saw a man with a rifle on a nearby rooftop before shots rang out.

Who is the suspect?
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has identified the shooting suspect as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20.

The man is known to be from Bethel Park in Pennsylvania, or about 70km from Butler – the scene of the crime.

The gunman was shot dead by agents of the US Secret Service – the agency that also serves as the security detail for presidents and former presidents.

Previously, the FBI did not immediately name the suspect, as they awaited DNA results.

The FBI statement added that this remains an “active and ongoing investigation.”

The FBI also called the shooting incident in the middle of the crowd an “attempted murder.”

FBI special agent Kevin Rojek said: “Tonight we had what we call an assassination attempt on our former president, Donald J. Trump,” he said.

“This is still an active investigation,” he added, noting that they have multiple agencies on scene investigating the incident.

So far, the FBI says it does not know the motive.

In this incident, former president Donald Trump survived.

He has reportedly been released from hospital after receiving treatment, two sources told CBS News , the BBC’s US partner.

In his first comments, Trump thanked the US Secret Service, and other law enforcement “for their swift response to the shooting that just occurred”.

“Most importantly, I would like to express my condolences to the families of those killed in the demonstrations, as well as to the families of the others who were seriously injured,” he said in a post.

“It is incredible that such an act could happen in our country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now deceased,” he added.

He ended his post with, “GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

The crowd shouted “get down”.

Several US Secret Service personnel surrounded the former president for several seconds before he was rushed off stage with blood visible pouring from his ear and down the side of his face.

Trump briefly pumped his fist in the air as he was escorted down the steps of the stage and into an SUV.

The US Secret Service said in a statement that the attacker fired several rounds at the stage “from an elevated position outside the rally,” a distance later identified as less than 200 meters.

The agents killed the suspect at the scene.

“At a rally for former President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, on the evening of July 13 at approximately 6:15 p.m. (local time), a suspected shooter fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside the rally venue.

“US Secret Service personnel neutralized the shooter, who is now deceased. The Secret Service quickly responded with protective measures and former President Trump was safe. One guest was killed, and two others sustained critical injuries. The incident is under investigation and the Secret Service has notified the FBI,” the Secret Service said in a statement.

Joe Biden: ‘There is no place in America for violence’

In response, US President Joe Biden said “everyone should condemn” the violent incidents in Pennsylvania.

He said he hoped to speak to Donald Trump tonight, adding that he had been briefed on what happened.

“I’ve been trying to reach Donald. He’s with his doctors,” Biden said.

“We cannot let this happen. We cannot be like this. We cannot condone this,” he added.

President Biden also said that federal agencies were involved in the investigation into the shooting.

A reporter asked if he was sure it was an assassination attempt.

“I want to make sure we have all the facts,” said Trump’s rival in the US presidential election.
