Corruption Galore At Ghana’s Airport Terminal 3 – Foreigners Allegedly Forced To Pay Cash By Immigration Officials Who Pocket It For Themselves
Some immigration officials at the newly constructed Terminal 3 at the Kotoka International Airport are allegedly extorting money from foreigners during check-out to line their own pockets.
Ghanaians often complain about corruption among the politicians but we do the same every chance we get.
Immigration officers at Terminal 3 are reportedly forcing foreign nationals to pay visa on arrival fees in cash and then taking the money themselves.
A South African national who blew the whistle on the practice revealed they forced her to pay in cash even when she wanted to use her visa card, and then when they took the money, refused to issue a receipt.
“I told them I don’t have cash so I want to swipe my visa card to make payment; they said ‘no’, I should go and withdraw money from the ATM.,” she said.
“They told me I can’t have a receipt. I didn’t want to insist on that because I was scared they could revoke my visa, because they were all together in that: from the one who stamped my passport and the one who takes the cash. They were communicating in their local language and I didn’t understand what they were saying.”
She added that they also asked her to pay only Ghc 500, instead of the usual fee of Ghc 800
This money is going straight into the pocket of whichever official does so, leading to revenue losses for the state.
With citizens like these – who is really shocked about our politicians being as corrupt as they are? They once used to be citizens themselves, didn’t they?
The Ghanaian is simply corrupt and we reap the fruits of that in our leaders
