DJ Khaled Receives Toyota Giving Award At VH1’s “Save The Music” Gala

Toyota and VH1’s music education foundation recognized Queen Latifah and DJ Khaled for their work to bring music inside schools at its annual gala.

Special guest Lala Anthony introduced Queen Latifah to an audience that included Slick Rick, “Love & Hip Hop: New York’s” Juju and Yandy Smith, Naturi Noughton, Rosci Diaz and Mona Scott-Young. The invite-only awards party was filmed at the SIR Studios in Manhattan Monday night.

“To strip schools of music and art is like stripping your own soul,” Queen Latifah said after collecting her award. “Some people find out what they want to be in life through music and art…Sometimes music and art can park something in you that awakens your mind and lets you know that you can reach further and think further.”

Toyota partnered with “Save The Music” for its Giving Award, where the company works with artists to give grants to music education programs. This year, Toyota’s Steve Curtis presented DJ Khaled with the Toyota Giving Award for his commitment to education.

“Toyota is proud to honor a noted philanthropist and longtime champion of music education,” Curtis told the crowd. “He has donated money so schools could buy music equipment. And he serves as national spokesman for ‘Get Schooled,’ which works to motivate students to graduate and succeed in college through his famous ‘Keys to Success’ program.”

DJ Steve Aoki also received the Music Innovator Award.

After the program, Wyclef Jean wowed the crowd with a set dedicated to Queen Latifah with his new proteges, the Wavie Gang.
